Hi, I’m Sue Botterill, a stay-at-home mom of four children.
In 2004 I launched a local magazine for my neighborhood which has been a huge success story.
I’ve developed a great, easy-to-follow program - My Mag - that has allowed hundreds of stay-at-home moms (and dads) to achieve financial independence in their spare time, doing something that they enjoy and that adds great value to their local community...
They have all the time they need with their children – yet are earning significant sums each month.
I purchased my package from My Mag in June 2006 and my launch issue came out the first weekend of September!!
We have a well known cook locally and I asked her if she would give me a recipe each month, she eagerly agreed to, I then found a local store who were willing to sponsor the recipe page as long as she (the cook) plugged their kitchenware within her recipe page. This then meant the page was paid for on a monthly basis. Then I asked a local taxi firm to sponsor my ‘Useful Numbers’ page, so that is also paid for!
Thorpe Bay is a very affluent area and when I started calling surrounding businesses I stressed this point and pointed out the quality of the magazine, its usefulness to the residents and being a resident of Thorpe Bay myself, believed the area had needed something like this for a long time. This confidence I feel came out on the phone and my clients have been very supportive and trusting right from the start.
I had set myself a target of 52 pages and sold the whole magazine a week ahead of schedule. As my client list grew I became more confident and rang a local advertising agency who bought two colour pages for two of their clients. Once I had a few big name clients on board it was plain sailing for the rest of the magazine, as all the other business trusted that those clients must know what they are doing.
Although it’s been hard work and a lot of worry, I made just under £2500 ($3750) profit for my first issue. I couldn’t believe I had taken this amount of money. The team at My Mag are amazing, they are so supportive and I’ve never looked back over what is nearly two years now during which time my magazine – and my income – has continued to grow..
Until now, My Mag has only been sold in Europe, but we've received so many requests from people wanting to do this in America, that I’ve finally launched over here…
By this time next month you can easily have dozens of new business customers eagerly buying up space in your magazine and regularly coming back for more each month! I just thought I would quickly write from my perch here on “Cloud 9” to tell you……I DID IT!
I cannot begin to thank you for the stress, sleepless nights, trips to complete strangers in the rain, computer mayhem (including blown motherboards and losing everything we had spent three weeks working on) and all the other pain and sadness you have caused me in the last two months because my husband and I have just completed delivery of 3000 copies of Cranbrook Infomag in our local community and the magazine has been a roaring success.
I am a little bit shocked, totally dumbstruck and in complete awe of myself for having achieved something as good as this! I have sold advertising to anyone who is anyone in Ilford, Essex on the strength of a promise and an honest face and so far feedback on my lovely magazine has been hugely positive.
Fifteen months ago I was made redundant on the day I was due to return to the office from maternity leave. My lovely nanny and I embarked on registering as child minders and we have been child minding ever since, quite successfully but not earning near what I would have liked without compromising the care of the children who were with us by growing the numbers too much.
Last September I was approached by a recruitment consultant and went for interview with another London law firm. I was offered the job, but I made the mistake of asking for some flexibility with my working hours in order to facilitate getting children to school, nursery etc. and, unbelievably, this was met with a withdrawal of their offer. I was flabbergasted.
In the process of this distraction, I managed to slam my finger in the car door and it was only after releasing the primal scream that came with it, that I took myself to my doctor, whereupon I found the article about Sue in Red magazine. I knew instinctively there and then that this is what I would do and I have called that blackened finger nail, my lucky nail ever since. It stayed black just long enough for me to sell, produce and distribute my first magazine of 40 pages, with a £3,000 ($4,500) profit in the bank!! It is now time for a well earned manicure!
So may I take the time to tell you from the bottom of my heart I thank you Sue for being a mum with the foresight, determination, good judgment, imagination and sheer resilience to have come up with My Mag and for keeping all those balls in the air. You have made me a very happy, contented mum indeed, not to mention Proud, Awestruck and just a little relieved!!!!
